My dreams were as ambitious when I was in second grade as they are now, and every story has to have a beginning. My beginning took place in the school library when I was introduced to the bestselling "Wings of Fire" series by Tui T. Sutherland. After that, I fell in love with dragons; the rest is history.
Before I began writing about these firebreathing creatures, I played with the darker, moon-stalking idea of beasts known as werewolves. Not only was I obsessed with dragons, but I also loved to read the short ghost stories in National Geographic, and it always intrigued me how someone had the idea of making such a classic, haunted monster we all recognize today.
I remember the article so clearly, ripped and worn from the continuous flip of the pages, the spine so broken it was falling apart.
One day during recess, with a pink Shinola Detroit journal in one hand and a stubby pencil in the other, I began to brainstorm, and an idea came to me. What if there were two sisters- the older a scientist- who accidentally turns herself into a werewolf? And the younger sibling has to find her, possibly risking her life in the process.
I never got past four or five pages of that story, but hey, we all have to start somewhere, right? And as I said before, that was only the beginning of a long but exciting journey.
I've always loved dragons, so why not write about them? I didn't simply want to write about the creatures we read about like in The Hobbit, or Game of Thrones and such; I wanted to give them a detailed culture and lifestyle that made them more believable and interesting. They weren't going to be gold-hoarding snakes that fought knights in shining armor- they were going to be an intelligent species, with their own music, mathematics, history, geography, sciences, and more...
I was going to write dragons as they'd never been written before, but that's a lot of world-building and tedious time of imagining, and after so many years, it finally began to fall into place... Now what about the main character? The book itself?
It's a secret... for now.
A fantasy-fiction romance with a bit of mystery, battle montages, and war, filled with thieves, princesses, secrets, evil, and monsters. If Avatar (James Cameron) and How to Train Your Dragon came together for a novel, that's what my book would be: beautifully detailed scenery and a never-before-seen world, with fire-breathing dragons and other flying creatures in an entire kingdom far away from humans.
This book is geared toward young adults and older teens.
If a novel doesn't have a well-developed cast of characters, it ruins the entire book. My novel has a wide variety of characters, all unique and created with reason. From cunning, handsome leaders of gangs to insane dragons locked away in prisons, all the way to wise, older dragons and a princess who'd rather stab someone's eye out than be called "Your Highness," there is sure to be a character you fall in love with.
And I finally see the finish line.
I created a language specific to the dragon tribes, along with unique studies of sciences, history, mathematics, legends, and music. The plot itself is unlike any other novel, with enough twists to keep your head spinning and cliff-hangers you don't see coming. I've spent years crafting a world for the five dragon tribes, drawing maps and making sure it is unlike anything anyone had ever seen. My novel is sure to keep you reading and wanting to know what happens next!
